WORKING WITH PLAYWRIGHTS

Though I relish working on classics and well-known plays of all periods and styles, collaborating with playwrights in the development of new works for the theater have a special place in my heart.

[Two authors I’ve worked with have made the following comments]

IN APPRECIATION OF BOB KALFIN AS A PLAYWRIGHT I CAN’T THINK OF ANYTHING MORE EXCITING, SHORT OF A FULLY FINANCED PRODUCTION, THAN SITTING DOWN WITH BOB KALFIN AND EXPLORING THE THEATRICAL POSSIBILITIES IN A NEW SCRIPT OF MINE. AFTER EACH MEETING WITH BOB, I RETURN TO MY PLAY INVIGORATED WITH RENWED FAITH IN THE VIABILITY OF MY WORK. BOB IS NOT ONLY THE IDEAL CREATIVE AND PERCEPTIVE READER OF A PLAY IN PROGRESS, BUT THE IDEAL AUDIENCE AS WELL. TIME AND TIME AGAIN, HE HAS TAKEN AN EARLY DRAFT OF MY PLAY AND FOUND BOTH THE HEART OF THE DRAMA AND NEW WAYS TO MAKE THE PLAY EVEN MORE EFFECTIVE. HE BRINGS A THREE DIMENSIONAL VISION TO HIS ANALYSIS OF A SCRIPT, DISCOVERING THEATRICAL DEPTH AND STAGEWORTHY FACETS IN BOTH CHARACTERS AND PLOT. MOST IMPORTANTLY HE BRINGS HIS RICH, DIVERSE AND INCOMPARABLE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE AS A DIRECTOR TO EACH AND EVERY PLAY HE HAS READ OF MINE. ALONG WITH HIS DEEP KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE IN THEATRE, HE HAS THE RARE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE HIS INSIGHTS WITH CLARITY AND PRECISION. THERE IS NO ONE BETTER THAN BOB KALFIN WHEN IT COMES TO READING A SCRIPT AND FINDING IT’S THEATRICAL SOUL. AND THERE IS NO ONE BETTER ABLE TO DIRECT THE FINISHED WORK THAN BOB HIMSELF. HE IS A TRIPLE THREAT- A CRITICAL AND CREATIVE READER, AN HONEST AND ENTHUSAISTIC AUDIENCE AND A MASTER DIRECTOR. I AM PRIVILEGED AND HONORED TO COUNT HIM AS A FRIEND AND A INVALUABLE COLLEAGUE. [ROBERT KARMON]

I am one lucky playwright to have collaborated on four projects with the genius of Director, Robert Kalfin. His vision, talent, support, and loyalty to my work is amazing. - Our Director-Playwright relationship is mutually respectful and highly creative, enabling my work to mature and develop in a constant nurturing environment. As Bob's script analysis has been so indispensable to the development of each script, I have given him the following credit on the title page of each play --  "Developed in Collaboration with Robert Kalfin."  This includes my recent publication by Dramatic Publishing of my two act - BECOMING ELEANOR became the play it is today.
